thirty four

Well, here we go. It’s my birthday!! And what do I do each year? Make a list….all about me. I’m going to keep up these birthday lists as long as I can come up with them! After all…I am a list lover! Amazingly, I only had to re write one thing that I found on one of my previous lists. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be.

1.) I struggle making plans or any concrete decisions really.

2.) Growing and preserving food makes me happy.

3.) I don’t take vitamins. Instead I consider my diet to be my main nutritional value.

4.) I never want my kids to ride motorcycles…they scare me.

5.) For the first time in my life I am starting to consider myself a writer.

6.) I used to take all my kids with me everywhere I went…these days I usually go solo…or at least limit myself to two kids tops.

7.) I wrote this list yesterday. Thought about working ahead months ago, but I don’t think I’ll ever work ahead that way.

8.) I am a homebody. I can stay home for days, maybe even weeks, without leaving. I wonder how I’ll feel about that when I’m buried in three feet of snow this winter.

9.) I think I may actually enjoy building things with Legos with my kids…just sometimes.

10.) As a kid I ALWAYS had a Dairy Queen ice cream cake for my birthday. Then one year my littlest sister made me a gluten dairy free version. It stuck and now my husband makes me one every year too. Yummm. I can’t wait!

11.) I have sculpted two life sized human heads in my life…one was of myself, a self portrait.

12.) I used to bring Kayla with me to college when she was two. She would sit under the desk and play quietly the whole time.

13.) Thirteen is my magical number.

14.) I am a night owl, yet love to get up early. Those two don’t really mix well.

15.) I am very forgetful and suffer from major brain fog at times.

16.) I love baking and eating pies. Particularly peach pie. But blueberry is pretty nice too.

17.) I just started eating (grass-fed pastured) meat. After seventeen years of being vegetarian I never imagined.

18.) I get anxious when my family separates and goes off in different directions. I like it when I know exactly where everyone is.

19.) I am a quick surface house cleaning kinda gal, but things like sink, toilet, and shower scrubbing tend to fall to the wayside. When I do indulge it is usually around midnight.

20.) I am really good at having babies. Literally. My midwife would attest.

21.) Almond butter is one essential ingredient that I should have on hand at all times in the kitchen!

22.) I have no clocks hung up in my house…haven’t in years.

23.) I think I have the best kids, the best husband, and the best families EVER (for me that is). And I love them all so much!

24.) Too much noise easily overwhelms me. When my kids get too loud, they go outside.

25.) I cut my kid’s hair, but send the dog to the groomer.

26.) My finger nails are always cut short. I can’t stand them long. And certainly never painted.

27.) I don’t shave my legs very often.

28.) I’m pretty good at roller skating. I used to go with the Girl Scouts a lot as a kid. We returned to the same rink I skated at as a kid this past fall…and after years, I could still skate fast around the rink. It felt crazy.

29.) I thrive on sunshine, but cloudy days can make me feel cozy too.

30.) When I think I need something, I usually figure out pretty quickly that I don’t.

31.) I feel like I am always aiming for simple, even though sometimes simplicity might seem complicated.

32.) I worked at a horse farm when I was 21. It was one of my favorite jobs. Cleaning the stalls and dumping manure.

33.) After that I got a job at a grocery store and rode my bike two miles to work and two miles home every day. Often in the dark, but I didn’t have a car.

34.) I like to dream BIG. Sometimes things don’t pan out, but that doesn’t stop me from thinking that they could…someday…or if I wish hard enough, maybe sooner than later.

  2. Ellen says:

Happy Birthday, Lisa! Reading your list…you and I sound a whole lot alike, actually. Homebody? That’s me to a t. Surface cleaner – had to laugh at that. Worrying about kids, going out solo (very nice when it happens and it happens a lot more often now since my kids are older), #1 is difficult for me as well and certainly the brain fog thing. Happy 34th! May you be blessed with many many other good birthdays. So how was the cake?

  3. Happy Birthday! I love your list idea – and especially your last wish x

  4. Becca says:

  8. Erin says:

Happy Birthday, Lisa! Your 34th birthday was Sophie’s 9.5 birthday – now I can remember! After reading your list, I can understand even more why people frequently mix us up (this still cracks me up!!)

I have such a hard time making decisions, too. And the food hoarding! I have 7 gallons of ferments in the back yard because I ran out of room in the kitchen. :) The harvest waits for noone…. I’ve been taking only a couple of kids out with me, too – but when I go completely solo, I begin to feel anxious and naked after a little while. I hope I don’t feel that way constantly once they’ve all grown….

I won’t go on about how most of your list could be my list, too – but the birthing babies part – I remember our midwife saying that we had so much in common, we even birthed babies the same way! I thought that was pretty funny. :)

I hope you enjoyed your special day!

    Love,
    Erin
